The Boykin spaniel was first bred as a hunting dog in the 1900s in South Carolina. Hunters who already had boats loaded with guns and hunting gear could not fit a large hunting dog on the boat. Breeders wanted a strong yet small dog that could travel with the hunters on the small boats and canoes and retrieve the animals in the water and on land. They also are known for flushing birds out of the bush so the hunters are able to shoot them as they are flying away. They are not pointer dogs.

The Boykin spaniel is known for being able to withstand heat, which also makes it an ideal hunting dog, and they are able to keep running with lots of energy for a long time in hot weather. They can hunt all day long in the heat. It has been able to assist people with hunting pheasants, ducks, doves, turkeys, geese, quail, grouse and waterfowl. They have an excellent sense of smell and are capable of tracking animals including deer. They can even help hunters find a wounded animal that has been shot. They have a lot of energy while hunting but they are very easy to control while doing so. They have excellent speed and agility and can swim very well.. The owner needs to be able to communicate well with the Boykin spaniel and tell instruct him what he needs him to do.

They are about a medium-sized dog. Male Boykin spaniels grow to be about 30 to 40 lbs and females will be about 25 to 35 lbs. Boykin spaniel puppies are usually reddish or dark brown and are one solid color. Some will have a white spot on their chest. Their fur is relatively short, but is fine and curly. It needs to be brushed a few times a week to prevent the fur from becoming matted. This also minimizes shedding. Their coat is waterproof, which makes them ideal for the water. It is especially feathery on their ears, chest, belly and feet. They need to be groomed frequently especially if they are hunting dogs. This is because they may get ticks, briars and other things in their long fur that will get worse over time. Their ears are long and floppy and lay flat to the sides of the head. Their eyes are usually the same color as their coat, but are sometimes yellow. Their tail is docked and kept trimmed.

Boykin spaniel puppies are especially easy to train and they get along great with children and other dogs in the house. They love their human family and love affection. Because of their kind disposition and curious personalities, they do not make particularly great watchdogs.

Since they are bred for hunting, they need lots of exercise. They have lots of energy and need a way to burn it off every day. You can take them for walks or runs. They have exceptional endurance and can maintain their energy throughout the day. Otherwise, the dog may become bored inside the house and may become destructive. They adapt very well to new environments.

Boykin spaniel puppies are usually hesitant in new situations but it never takes them long to warm up to meeting new people and feeling comfortable and safe. Breeders start training Boykin spaniel puppies from an early age. They get them familiar with the idea of becoming a hunting dog and are taken out side to play and are handled very frequently. They get to know birds and are let to run in fields and play in the water and woods when they are young. By 10 weeks, they can be trained to retrieve birds and can be used to a gun being shot nearby.

Boykin spaniels can live between 14 and 16 years. They are generally a very healthy breed. As with most spaniel, Boykin spaniels are prone to ear infections. Almost 40 percent of Boykin spaniel puppies are born with hip dysplasia. When they are two years old, they can have an X-ray to test for this condition.

I'm about to get a boykin puppy and it's back legs are weak sometimes when it walks. The puppy is 6 weeks old and I am wondering if this dog is more prone to hip dysplasia if it has this condition as a puppy. Should I pick a different puppy in the litter?

Update: Nevermind, my question has been answered.  Thank You.
